MELVA SMITH-RICHMAN Melva Smith-Richman works in fibers (predominately tapestry) as well as oil and acrylic painting. Her subject matter is usually inspired by nature, her observations during her many travels - our ever changing, often threatened environment. Her home has been on Amelia Island Florida since her move from Wenonah and Cape May in southern New Jersey. Melva has always been exploring, teaching, and making art. She received her B.A. in Art as well as her M.A. in Art Education and certification in curriculum and supervision from Rowan University. Additional study includes Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Mannings Weaving School plus numerous workshops. As an artist educator Melva had a successful career as District Supervisor of Art in a large school district in New Jersey. She has taught art at the high school and middle school level as well as Art Appreciation at the college level. Melva Smith-Richman is a member of American Tapestry Alliance, Tapestry Weavers South, Handweavers Guild of America and Florida Craftsmen. She has exhibited incolleges, museums, and public spaces as well as galleries. Her work may be found inpermanent public and private collections.
