2009 SHRIMP FESTIVAL JUDGES

STEPHEN HEYWOOD

Stephen Heywood received his Bachelors of Science Degree in ceramics at Southern Utah University in 1999 and his Masters of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2002.  From 2001-2003 Heywood acted as the Coordinator and instructor for the Erie Art Museum’s Clay Space community ceramics program in Erie Pennsylvania.  He has been a visiting artist at a number of colleges and Universities.  Heywood exhibits his work extensively and has been in over 70 national juried shows and invitationals. In 2004 Heywood was selected to represent the United States in the First International, Ceramics Journal Editors Symposium, Emerging Artist Exhibition, in Xian China.  In 2007 Heywood participated in and won Best of Show in the Westmoreland Arts National in Westmoreland Pennsylvania.  He is a member of The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and a board member for Florida Craftsmen.  His work has been published in 500 Cups, 500 Bowls, Image Transfer on Clay and the Periodicals Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly.  From 2003-2006 Heywood taught ceramics and design at Florida Community College at Jacksonville.  He is currently teaching Ceramics and Design at The University of North Florida.  JANET POWERS 

Powers began her professional career as a nurse but shortly thereafter began studies in art at Coastal Carolina University and through many nationally known teachers.  She is affiliated with galleries on the South and East coasts and has exhibited extensively, including the Brenda Taylor Gallery in New York City.    She is the recipient of many awards in shows and exhibits throughout the southeast  including two Best of Show Awards, Laurinburg Arts in the Park, and Georgetown Watercolor Society Show.  She is a member of the South Carolina  and Georgia Watercolor Societies.    Powers  has been judge in numerous shows in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, and was a judge in the 2004 Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival.  Powers lives with her husband, Paul, on a salt water river marsh.  Her recent work consists of coastal marsh scenes painted in oil on canvas, paper and board. The paintings portray a mood depicting the subtle beauty and spirit of these coastal marsh landscapes.  Check out her website at www.janetpowers-artist.com.
